Buying
Tips ~
1. Look at the rabbit’s eyes for any signs of discharge.
2. Look at the nose for any signs of discharge. Look at the inside front paws for any matted fur from dried nasal discharge.
3. Look inside the ears for any signs of scabs, open sores, discharge or scaly skin.
4. Check
the genital area for slit penis [in males], discharge, matted fur from
runny stools, and/or open sores. Verify the sex of the rabbit.
Sometimes does "turn into" bucks and visa versa, it happens all the
time. A reputable breeder will stand by their sale and replace the rabbit or refund your money.
5. Check the teeth for signs of malocclusion.
6. Gently turn the rabbit on its back to see if hocks are straight and free of sores.
7. Handle
the rabbit to check for temperament. Look for signs that would indicate
the rabbit might be aggressive, such as biting or scratching.
8. Check fur for open sores, missing patches and/or scabs.
9. Check all feet for broken toes and mismatched toenails. Both are a DQ on the Show Table!
10. Pose
the rabbit to check for type according to
ARBA Standard of Perfection
[head, ears, shoulders, rise, midsection, hindquarters, bone, fur,
color] and that is it free from any disqualifications from competition.
11. Ask
to look at the pedigree to see breeding lines for quality. Ask
the breeder what type of litters has the rabbit produced. How many
offspring did the breeder retain in their herd.
12. Make sure the rabbit’s genetics will fit into your breeding program if you plan to breed.
